Saunas
Please note: We do NOT build barrel saunas. We think barrel saunas are great, however there are very few similarities between a barrel and a Smart-Sauna. Our buildings are built to modern, residential construction standards. Our pricing reflects the standard of products, materials, craftsmanship and services we aim to provide. With that being said, we will always strive for quality - not quantity.
There is a reason a McDonald's cheeseburger tastes the same in Michigan as it does in Tokyo - CONSISTENCY! We have spent hours and hours ....and hours designing, developing and perfecting a system that allows us to build consistent, high-quality saunas that should last a lifetime. We build them to order in our shop and then deliver them to our customers. Building in our shop takes weather out of the equation.
Floor system: Our floors start with 4x4 pressure treated runners. These runners enable the building to be "portable" while also keeping the floor frame off the ground and adding stiffness to the overall structure. We use 2x4 pressured treated floor joists placed every 16in. Blocking is then added above the runners and between every joist to effectively LOCK the entire floor system together. The floor frame is then covered with 5/4" x 6in cedar and fastened to the joists with screws. The deck boards are installed tight with only enough space for water to naturally drain and never pool on the floor. Our floor system eliminates cold feet and the need for drains altogether. The tiny gaps between the decking allow cool air to be pushed OUT of the building due to the natural thermal effect of heat rising. Basically, as the sauna air warms, there is only one direction for the lower, cool air to move - down and out!
Walls are built with 2x4 framing spaced every16in. We use 2 bottom plates and 2 top plates for extra rigidity. The first bottom plate is pressure treated to ensure that moisture NEVER becomes a problem. The walls are insulated with R-13 fiberglass insulation and sealed with a radiant heat reflective vapor barrier. This barrier encapsulates the room keeping moisture in and also directing the heat inwards. The wall framing is then furred out beyond the vapor barrier to create a small air space. This space creates a thermal break between the outside walls and the inside paneling. This space allows air to continually move behind the wall paneling - mitigating moisture and adding R-value. We use local, number 1 or select grade Northern White Cedar paneling in our saunas.
We currently offer 3 siding options including, LP Smartside (grooved OR board & batten), nickel-gap cedar siding, and hand hewn log siding. The wall sheathing and siding gets fastened to each stud from the top plates all the way down to the band boards of the floor frame to create the highest possible shear strength. There should never be movement or settling with our buildings.
Our roof system is built rock solid. The trusses are built with 2x4's and double gussets. The sauna eaves are 6in wide on the back and both sides. There is a full 2ft overhang off the front - supported by 4"x4" solid cedar corbels. Soffits are also enclosed with cedar. The roof deck is 1/2in OSB covered with synthetic felt underlayment and finished off with limited lifetime warranty architectural shingles.
Our sauna doors are custom built in our shop. They are 2 inches thick and constructed of solid cedar with a wooden (clear pine) sash window.
Heat - We use HUUM Hive wood-fired sauna stoves in our saunas. They are an incredible quality made of stainless steel and cast iron. We also use ONLY Huum stainless chimney kits. We follow all manufacturer recommendations and instructions for the safest and most efficient wood-fired heat possible. If you are interested in an electric sauna heater, we also install Huum electric heaters. Termination and final hook up of power is the owners responsibility.
Like our sheds, our goal is to offer the highest quality saunas available! We offer base-pricing on multiple different sizes of modular saunas. The base price is the true "out the door price" on a high quality Smart-Sauna (perfect just way it is). From there, we offer endless upgrades and customizations to make your sauna as unique as you! Quality and price model is where the similarities between our sheds and saunas stop! You can rest assured, there is nothing "shed" about a Smart-Sauna!

There's nothing quite like the smell of cedar saw dust in the workshop and to us, there is something truly fulfilling about crafting these incredible little structures! It's the details and foresight that really count! Our goal is to provide the highest quality saunas in the Michigan and maybe even the Midwest. Each one is built in our shop (one at a time) in a methodical and precise fashion.
